Alec Empire (of Atari Teenage Riot) "Founder of Berlin's Digital Hardcore Recordings, Alec Empire created some of the most musically diverse works of the 1990s, recording both as himself and with the trio Atari Teenage Riot. Empire was often identified with his ATR productions -- lo-fi breakbeats played at the speed of thrash that simultaneously embraced the energy of punk, the uncompromising ferocity of industrial music, and the futurism of techno. On his solo albums, however, Empire ranged through isolationist ambient, electro, breakbeat, hard techno, even twisted lounge music."

Wednesday September 27th 7:30pm FIRST UNITARIAN CHURCH
Subtle
Featuring Dose One and members of cLOUDDEAD, Anticon and 13&God, the 2nd album from this critically-acclaimed genre-bending SF band is one of the most vital and original records you'll hear this year. A full on band, with a seriously varied instrumentation: electric and acoustic cello, electric and acoustic bass, woodwinds, synthesizers, drums, guitar, keyboards, melodica and sampler that offers up a way more expanded, and much fuller sound than any of their previous work as solo artists. Their latest EP features a remix by Soft Pink Truth and a non-album collaboration with Wolf Parade. Astralworks/Lex Recordings.

Tuesday October 3rd 7:30pm FIRST UNITARIAN CHURCH
Be Your Own Pet
Are you sad that the Yeah Yeah Yeah's seem to have gone all '80s pop? Still looking for that blistering loud, fast and fun rock sound with some strong commanding female vocals at its helm? Then Be Your Own Pet have got your fix for sure. Creating quite a buzz in the last couple years with their full throttle rock sound planted firmly in punk rock as well as in the garage. This definitely had us thinking a bit of the glory of The Gits, a young PJ Harvey doing Stooges covers, and yeah, the urgency of the YYY's on their first ep and full length. They've won the heart of Thurston Moore whose Ecstatic Peace has been putting out their records and this is one of those rare instances where the hype seems to make sense as this is some great rockin' fun.
Black Lips
Though barely in their 20's, the Black Lips have already toured the US and Europe several times, released two albums on Bomp! records, lost a lead guitarist in a car crash, built a rabid cult following and earned a well deserved reputation one of the wildest live bands around due to onstage fist fights, nudity, violence, arson, projectile vomiting and other body fluids. You don't want to stand to close to the stage at a Black Lips performance. This grimy and chaotic four-piece garage-punk band truly don't give a fuck and will unintentionally prove it live time and again. Formed with the intention to cross the sound of the Back From The Grave 60's garage compilation series with the Germs, the Lips have developed a sound unlike anyone else. Anyone familiar with the group will no doubt be a bit surprised by the sound of their latest "Let It Bloom" album which, while still skuzzy and raw, contains their catchiest and most melodic moments to date. If Royal Trux had listened to the Troggs instead of the Rolling Stones, they might sound like this (though the album does sound quite Stonesy at times).

Wednesday October 18th 7:30pm FIRST UNITARIAN CHURCH
Mount Eerie
A hodge-podge of tape-loop trickery, stereo panning, super fuzz bass, radio signals, acoustic pluckings, clamoring drums, tympani, xylophone, organ, distorted piano, keyboards and noise that aims for the lo-fi jugular. Delicate pop songcraft, emo-blown yearning, and white-hot rockers, loaded with hooks, harmonies, well thought (and placed) lyrics, and imagination galore. K Records.
Calvin Johnson
Funk oddball solo material from the founder of K Records as well as member of The Beat Happening, Dub Narcotic and Halo Benders. One of the best dudes ever in "punk". K Records.
D+
If you're a fan of the Microphones, you can thank Bret Lunsford. After working for years in Beat Happening with Calvin Johnson and Heather Lewis, Lunsford was ready for his own time in the spotlight. So, with bassist Karl Blau and an unknown drummer from Anacortes called Phil Elvrum, he formed D+. This was Elvrum's first introduction to K Records and the rest, as they say, is history. Minimalist indie-pop ooser with a sense of melody and rhythm; Lunsford's droll vocals are charming, as is the self-deprecating wit which drives many of his songs.

Saturday October 21st 8:00pm - At The Starlight Ballroom
TV On The Radio
If you guys don't know about them know, give up! . A passionate, captivating, artful band with languid bass grooves and simmering guitars. Atmospheric tensions take shape, gradually build, deepen and close in. The vocals reminds us of Peter Gabriel so much sometimes that it is unnerving. But in a good way. Kind of like classic Genesis filtered through the depressive brood of modern slowcore mope rock. But with lots of studio sheen and ambient fuckery. Dark and delirious, dreamy and moody and oh so good!
Grizzly Bear
We initially thought this to be another of the menagerie of wildlife named artists associated with Animal Collective, but they aren't. While they do tread in and around a similar lo-fi, art-folk trail as A.C., their travels take a gentler pace through prettier passages. So hushed, introspective and slightly woozy with brittle male vocals, delicate chimes, an occasional guitar strum, barely-there drones and mysterious wisps of texture. The percussion sounds as though it's being tapped and shaken out on random twigs, pebbles and pods. Warp Records.

Sunday November 5th 7:30pm FIRST UNITARIAN CHURCH
Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower
Innovative no wave/post-punk action, delivered with strangled structures, plenty of honking, and damaged sexuality. Fiery, dance-inviting, and deadly. For fans of Locust, Blood Brothers, Contortions, and Sex Pistols.

Weekend recap:
Ate at
Raw(new sushi spot in center city) had this [pic] for dinner. Then slept a bit, went to johnny brenda's and then off to hands and knees which was ultra hipster (i had a good time none the less which included a rock star entrance on my part where as soon as i got there 3 different girls ran up and one was screaming my name across the club...i already was rolling in with a crew so that was cool) Sat. had good breakfast at carmen's again. Good dinner at Cantina (multiple margarita pitchers aided this) Went an listened to somthing like 10 of 17 bands that played at Danger Danger which culminated with Stinking Lizaveta. Got wicked heartburn from the sparks i was drinking and slept poorly. Ok so i was just about to write about the continuation of the songs I have been learning to play when i realized i never posted to tell you guys that i have been learning a ton covers with John and Gregg. this list of covers goes as follows:
Beatles:
She loves you
I Wanna hold Your Hand

Baby Its You
All my Loving
Everybodys got something to hide except for me and my monkey
+ The Rolling Stones - Heart of stone
Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe
The What Fours - Basement Walls

Movie Night last night... first was King Kong*1 which was long but actually very good. CG is getting really good these days. The facial expressions on Kong were really very moving. This was done by putting multiple sensors on an actors face and then cg mapping his facial expressions. The effect makes the cg very realistic. After a short nap I was ready for Live Freaky Die Freaky*2 which was produced By Tim Armstrong (Rancid, Op Ivy) and Stars(voice), Billy joe Armstrong (Green Day) as Charles Manson, Among other Pop punk stars such as Travis Barker (Blink 182) and the the other dudes from Green Day and some other bands... This movie is really weird but kind of funny. Lots of pupet sex and gore and a really funny gay guy. then i ate some hot pockets. mmmmmnn ham and cheese hot pocket. awwwwl baby.
